What's wrong with Pete's couch?

This is beyond pathetic. The only thing that allows an anti-pot message to be effective is ignorance. The only thing that allows any argument made by anti-pot nutbars to be effective is ignorance. Anybody, and I mean anybody who has ever used the drug will tell you that it's effects are overblown.

Apparently, the American government has (finally) realized this. So now they're trying a different approach - cede all of the points to the opposing side. While it's good to see the US government admitting that pot doesn't cause death and chaos, it does sort of undermine their argument when they acknowledge that their primary argument for keeping it illegal is a blatant falsehood. (And in fact, they say right in the ad, and quite explicitly, that you have a higher chance of dying if you don't smoke weed! I'm not even being facetious, that's what it says.)

So basically, all they're left with is the argument from personal preference - which basically goes like this: I don't like marijuana, therefore it should be illegal. I don't like pot, therefore people should go to jail for being caught with it. I don't like weed, therefore people should have their lives ruined if the crown decides to press charges.

It's absolutely outrageous, and it really reveals the craven depths of the administration's arrogance. They're willing to flat-out admit that they're wrong, but are going to stay the course. It's Orwellian in the worst possible sense of the term.

Nice post, you hippy.

The pro-pot hippies ignore science for personal choice. We ban cigarettes everywhere yet you want to make yet another substance that causes lung cancer MORE available?

You'll change your tune when you get older and have kids.

"Hippies?" Like Jim Prentice? (Who supports pot legalization, btw.) Okay, if that's how you want to define hippie, I don't really have a problem being called one. Mr. Prentice is older than you, and does have children. His attitude: "Marijuana is an issue between a father and his teenage daughter." (Quoted from a 2003 Tory leadership debate.)

If anyone is ignoring science, it's the anti-pot zealots. There is no proof that pot is any more harmful than cigarettes. The only studies which say that pot is the demon seed are ones funded by groups that want to keep it banned. That's not just ignoring science, it's outright contempt for it.

As for personal choice... I'm not going to apologize for supporting invididual liberty over collectivist tyranny. Never have, never will.

Hey Ryan good post. I agree with you. On the other hand....if they had thrown a fridge in with the couch and warned how the munchies might turn Americans into a nation of grotesquely obese people, they might have made me sit up and pay attention.
But I guess the Americans can't say that can they???

Isn't America already the fattest country in the world?

Yup... so you can see the problem. If they get the munchies and eat even more they could become practically monstrous. The Great War on Terror would grind to a halt. They wouldn't fit into their battle fatigues, armoured vehicles or planes. All they would be able to do is load them into Hercs and drop them on the enemy. And then how safe would we be? No on second thoughts I think the Americans should go ahead and try to ban the stuff. Besides anything that slows down the demand for BC bud in the U.S., so they can send more our way, is OK with me...
