A Surplus of Hypocrisy

Remember when the Tories used to bitch and complain about the huge surplus, about Ottawa hording cash from the people? Remember when they'd pontificate about what they'd do with that money (give it back to the people, I believe is the way they put it) and how the Liberals were greedy, corrupt, big-government tax-and-spenders who didn't trust people with their own money for not doing it?

The federal surplus this year is $13 billion.

What the Conservatives complained about was how poorly the Liberals forecast the surplus.

By paying down $13 billion in debt the government has done future generations a great favour. Of course they already have cut taxes.

I'm looking forward to the Auditor General's report on Liberal Kyoto spending. It's supposed to be a good one.

Oh, Liberals aren't bitching. A thank-you for leaving the books in such great order might have been nice though.

But seriously, what is the size of the federal budget? I think looking at the surplus as a per centage of the overall budget would be more illuminating, and would put the figure in context. Forecasting is not an exact science.

And the anon who said paying down $13 billion in debt is a great favour, you're right, indeed it is. You can also thank the Liberals for making it law that surplusses be applied to the debt.

You're welcome.

a bcer: I believe the federal budget amounts to about $200 billion per year. For reference, that's less than the annual US military budget.

Well, this Liberal is bitching. My (lower income)taxes were increased!! And I don't have enough left over to benefit from the GST cut.

Seems to me I saw on Newsworld that the total federal debt was $450+ billion.

Also, at least the Conservatives didn't spend it for political purposes. They paid down the debt, which is good for the country, but no one votes for that kind of thing.
